Sunscreen according to skin type - how to choose the right sunscreen

Formula of ideal complexion

A flawless sun-kissed complexion is the timeless fashion trend that will rule this season on the beach, in the city, or in the mountains. But how to achieve both a flawless bronze tan and secure protection from the scorching rays?

For 20 years, the beach cosmetics brand SunLike has enjoyed the trust and love of its customers by offering a full range of high-quality sunscreens. They are based on cosmetic innovations for safe protection with the classic formulas "Beta Carotene" and "Panthenol", combined with natural extracts, many vitamins, and filters for UVA and UVB protection.

What do the acronyms we see in the "Sun Like" range stand for?

SPF. Sunburn Protection Factor means "sunburn protection factor". Sunburn is caused by UVB rays.

The number (e.g. 30) after SPF means that the product misses one-thirtieth of the rays (3.33%) and protects you 96.7%.

In addition to UVB, UVA rays also pass through the atmosphere. UVA rays don't cause painful burning symptoms, but they penetrate deep into cells and can even damage DNA. UVB rays are responsible for a bronze tan, but also for sunburn and skin cancer. This is why Sun Like applies UVA+UVB filters in all products, following the European Union recommendations.

A simple rule for protection

A high sun protection factor prolongs the pleasure of sunbathing and guarantees a long-lasting and healthy tan. There are several levels of protection:

- low (6-10),
- medium (15-25),
- high (30-50),
- very high (50+).

If you have fair skin, light hair, and eyes, and burn easily, it is recommended to use SPF 50 or at least SPF 30. If you blacken easily, you can use SPF 20 or even SPF 10, as your skin already has natural sun protection (melanin).

Did you know:  60 minutes of sun exposure at 9.00 am equals 15 minutes at 1.00 pm.

Factor X?

To determine the best sun protection factor for your skin, check what type of skin you have and how long you will stay in the sun.

Skin types

Europeans have four skin types:

Type I:

Blond hair, light eyes, pale skin and freckles - always ending up sunburnt without getting a tan. The protection time is 3 to 10 minutes.

Type II:

Blond hair, light eyes, fair skin, often freckles - sunburn almost always occurs. A slightly brownish complexion results. The protection time is 10 to 20 minutes.

Type III:

Dark blond to auburn hair, medium complexion, light or dark eyes. Skin rarely burns from the sun. Acquires a good brownish tan. Protection time is 20 to 30 minutes.

Type IV:

Dark auburn to black hair, dull skin, dark eyes. Almost never sunburn, tan is full and long-lasting. Protection time is approximately 45 minutes.

You can determine which product is right for your skin by following the formula:

Length of stay in the sun / time of protection according to skin type = SPF sun protection factor

 Quantity matters!

It is estimated that for maximum sun protection, you need to apply 30 mg of product (about 2 tablespoons) every 2 hours, starting 30 minutes before sun exposure. Don't forget to apply to sensitive areas - around the eyes, ears and nose!

If you are prone to pigmentation, you should select sunscreens with the broadest possible spectrum filters against UVB and UVA.

The classic sunscreen lotions, the spray milk "Sun Like" 30 or the lightly absorbing and non-staining spray dry oil "Sun Like" 20 are extremely convenient and suitable because of their easier spreading.

Important: Babies under 6 months should not be exposed to direct sunlight. For older babies, look for the special "Sun Like Kids 50+" range for children.  And the Sun Like formula for SUMMER 2021, in which we celebrate our 20th anniversary, is sun, summer, happiness and health!
